My Biography

I came to Kaiser Permanente because I liked the idea of working in a team environment with other doctors, and I liked the variety of specialties available here. Kaiser has a financial incentive to prevent disease, so we place a fairly high emphasis on preventable medicine. Our new electronic charting system, Health Connect, really assists me in understanding what is going on with a patient.

What I love about my work is that I can actually help people, especially with repetitive stress injury (RSI) problems stemming from a mechanical cause. In computer usage, I advocate using trackballs instead of mice. Heavy computer users should learn to become ambidextrous, occasionally switching hands. Also, users should remember to orient the whole body or chair towards the monitor, not just turn their necks. RSIs often respond to very simple solutions. Correcting poor or unhealthy mechanical habits is key to recovery.

Originally, I worked in corporate medicine, before transitioning to the clinical side. I’ve written an ergonomics manual. When I was on the Community Outreach for Musculoskeletal Line Committee with Dr. Bruce Blumberg, I helped begin Kaiser’s annual 5K and half-marathon events with Rhody Productions.

Aside from patients’ presenting physical ailments, I am interested in the interface between pain syndromes and emotional issues. I pay attention to accompanying emotional issues such as depression, the types of issues that often arise with the onset of chronic pain, especially back pain.

I enjoy the outdoors, especially cycling and sailing, and studying comparative religion and other spiritual topics. Stephen Hawking’s The Universe in a Nutshell is one of my favorite books. I enjoy jogging, and try to walk at lunch time. Welcome to the Occupational Medicine department!

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
