PERSONAL HISTORY
I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry from Chico State University of California, attended Stanford Medical School, graduating in 1990, and completed residency in Internal Medicine, also at Stanford in 1993. I immediately began working at Kaiser Permanente and consider myself very fortunate to have worked in this nonprofit environment where all resources are directed towards patient care, with an emphasis on preventative medicine.
I have always had a strong interest in art and, while raising my four children, learned to paint and weave. I enjoy exploring the tools of these crafts and am learning to spin yarns and make my own paints from pigments. I have practiced yoga for many years which helps me to stay balanced physically and emotionally. Swimming is an old love that I have resumed in the past few years. I find there is a similar meditative aspect in both yoga and swimming.
IF YOU ARE HOSPITALIZED
We understand this may be one of the most difficult times in your life. Illness is often unexpected and can be a frightening experience. And many, if not most of the staff and team may appear as strangers. But we are here to be of service and want to do everything we can to ease your fears and help you to become as well as you can be.
A Hospitalist is a doctor of Internal Medicine, who specializes in care of the patient with acute illness, requiring hospitalization. We do not see patients in outside settings (clinics). We do work closely with your primary care physician (and will assist in finding one for you, if needed). We keep your personal doctor informed of your progress and any changes we may make to your medications upon discharge from the hospital.
We are a teaching institution and have the privilege of working with and directing residents and interns. An intern is a first year resident in the internal medicine residency program. They are supervised by either second or third year residents or me. They are here to learn and become the best doctors they can be. I believe their patients benefit, because they are learning and practicing the most up to date medicine that is available.
Most mornings you will see us as a group at your bedside. We may ask questions and examine you together. Based on what you tell us and what we see, we will make decisions about your treatment, keeping you and your significant others informed about our decisions as much as we can.
