My Biography

I enjoy the opportunity to make acute interventions which can have dramatic impacts on a patients' lives. Within Kaiser Permanente's centralized health care model, patients receive care without worrying about substantial additional costs.

My long-standing research interests include decreasing the morbidity associated with cardiac surgery, particularly with regards to the effects of the nervous system (stroke, delirium, etc.). I believe patients should be educated about all their options and be included in decisions affecting their health care. My practice consists exclusively of cardiothoracic anaesthesiology. We have participated extensively in clinical research and education of anaesthesiology residents and fellows from UCSF. I have served as Scientific Program Chair and currently serve on the Board of Directors of the Society of Cardiovascular Anaesthesiology.

My wife Cynthia and my kids, Nikki and Chris, have been extremely supportive despite my very demanding schedule. Perhaps the attention of our two Labrador retrievers offset my long working hours! In my spare time, I try to spend as much quality time with my family as they will allow. I enjoy basketball, playing guitar (especially the blues), travel, tinkering with photography, and cinema. I keep healthy and active through eating a balanced diet and a regular program of exerise.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
