About Me
I was born and raised in Hawaii and left paradise to complete my medical training in California. I found the field of pulmonary and critical care medicine both stimulating and challenging. In 1986, I completed my pulmonary and critical care fellowship training at University of California Los Angeles Harbor general hospital.
In 1986, I was excited to join Kaiser because I believed in a prepaid health care approach to medicine and preventive care. The physicians that I work with are superb and provide excellent care in the field of pulmonary and critical medicine. My time is spent in the Intensive Care Unit, Pulmonary Clinic and Medical Education Administration
I am also very interested in education, especially in training young doctors. I was the program director for the Internal Medicine residency training program for 11 years and am presently the director of Medical Education at Kaiser Oakland. I oversee and teach over 100 residents at the Kaiser Oakland Medical Center which I find stimulating and challenging but which requires also me to be up to date on the most current medical research and treatments. I am an assistant clinical professor at the University of California San Francisco where I teach medical students and residents. I am also honored to have been elected a fellow in the prestigious American College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians.
I believe that patients with lung disease and critically ill patients require an attentive and caring physician. The approach I take in my practice is to care for patients with compassion and empathy while striving to be thorough and complete in my evaluation and treatment. I also firmly believe that patients should be well educated and informed of their disease processes so that they can participate in the decisions in their care. I do my best to keep my patients up to date on their medical care. I have links on my home page to common lung conditions and information regarding procedures (including before- and after-procedure information).
On a personal note, I enjoy playing tennis, spending time with my family, and enjoy drinking and collecting wine. I find cooking relaxing and a complement to my wine hobby. I also love sports and closely follow high school, collegiate, and professional football, baseball, and basketball.
I am very happy and enjoy working at Kaiser Oakland with my outstanding colleagues, supportive nursing and respiratory therapy staff, but most of all, caring for all the wonderful patients who have an interest in their health.
