About Me
Thank you for looking at my home page. I believe this page is a good way to introduce myself to patients and to direct people to some excellent internet-based health care resources. Please explore the links located at the left side of this page to dermatology-related sites for information on skin care, disease, and cancer.
I wish to especially recommend the website of the American Academy of Dermatology. The AAD is the largest and most representative of all dermatology associations. It has a membership of over fourteen thousand physicians worldwide and is committed to supporting and enriching patient care as well as advancing the science of dermatology to enhance diagnosis and medical, surgical, and cosmetic treatment of skin, hair and nails. At their site, you will be able to explore issues relating to sun safety, skin cancer, and all subjects related to skin, from A to Z.
I also want to point out our Cosmetic Services website. Many patients ask me what cosmetic services are performed at the Kaiser facilities and are unaware that different Kaiser facilities perform cosmetic procedures as simple as a facial to as complex as a "tummy tuck". The cosmetic website will give you a complete idea of what services -- surgical, laser, and non-surgical (thermage, Botox, "fillers") -- are offered at the various facilities.
I was born in New York and lived in Maine and Connecticut. I became interested in Dermatology when I worked as an AIDS researcher at New York University Medical Center in the early 1980's. My focus was on the tumor, Kaposi's Sarcoma, that defined AIDS as a disease entity in the early years of the epidemic. From that experience, I learned that Dermatology is more than just the study of the skin alone. It involves all the systems of our body as so much of what is occurring within us is reflected onto our skin. Consequently, Dermatology requires study of and coordination between multiple medical specialties: internal medicine, infectious disease, pediatrics, immunology, and surgery. I especially enjoy the practice of Dermatology inasmuch as I am able to meet and treat all the members of our patient community from children to seniors, and everyone in between.
I have been with Kaiser Permanente since 1992: six years at our Martinez facility and the rest in Oakland. I live in Oakland and enjoy running into patients in non-medical settings. You may find me hiking in Redwood Regional Park with my pooch, Thunder Bear, or cycling in Montclair. I also enjoy gardening, orchids, scuba diving, and Asian art and architecture. I'm also an avid supporter of the Northern California Golden Retriever Rescue Society and invite you to check out their website: www.golden-rescue.org !

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
