About Me

I am one of six staff pathologists at the Kaiser Oakland Medical Center. As a pathologist, I seldom interact personally with the many patients I serve. Instead, my role in healthcare is to serve as a consultant to other physicians who see patients directly. As a pathologist, I examine cells and tissues which are removed from patients. I work closely with physicians from many different medical and surgical specialities to ensure that diseases are correctly diagnosed and appropriately treated. In the course of a day, I will examine biopsies and excisions from many different locations in the body, such as the skin, the colon, the breast, and the female cervix. Here are a few examples of clinical situations in which a physician would turn to the pathologist for a diagnosis:

  • A woman finds a mass in her breast. Is it a benign cyst, or is it a breast cancer?

  • A man is evaluated for shortness of breath. A chest X-ray shows a mass in the lung. Is it a lung cancer, or is it a case of tuberculosis?

  • A mother finds a swollen lymph node in her child’s neck. Is it because of a viral illness or a childhood cancer?

These scenarios illustrate one of the main reasons why I chose Pathology as a speciality. It provides the opportunity to participate in the care of all kinds of patients. I also felt that the practice of pathology would continue to be very interesting and intellectually challenging throughout my professional career. This has proven to be the case. My special areas of professional interest are breast pathology and gynecologic cytopathology (the interpretation of Pap smears).

I have worked at the Kaiser Oakland Medical Center since 1994, when I completed my residency and fellowship training at UCSF. In my opinion, Kaiser is a wonderful place to practice medicine because physicians are able to focus on the practice of medicine rather than business. Physicians are uniformly encouraged to provide the best possible care for their patients, and they are supported in their pursuit of clinical excellence by the leadership of the medical group.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
