About Me
I was born in New Orleans and grew up in Alexandria, Louisiana. As a kid, I was fascinated with the manner in which my family doctor brought comfort to his patients. He was compassionate and giving. He was loved and appreciated by his patients for his compassion and care. By age 7, I dreamed of being like him. I wanted my career to be spent developing wonderful working relationships with people in need of health care. It is the only job I ever wanted to do.
After high school, I attended the University of Notre Dame. The football was great, but I went there because of their top-rated Pre-Med program. After 4 years of Pre-Med, I attended medical school at The University of Cincinnati in Ohio. This was followed by 3 years of residency in Internal Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Finally, I attended the University of California at San Francisco to complete my training in Pulmonary and Intensive Care Medicine.
Practicing Pulmonary and Intensive Care Medicine here at Kaiser Oakland for 17 years has been a realization of my childhood dream. I enjoy many of the wonderful relationships with patients that I dreamed of. Furthermore, I have many excellent colleagues to work with on a daily basis. My colleagues and I work well together and form a strong healthcare team. In addition, they have openly acknowledged and rewarded me for my hard work and commitment to providing quality health care. As a result, I have been honored over the years:
- America's Top-Rated Physicians for Pulmonology/Critical Care. Honored each year in Guide To Top Doctors, 2000 - 2003.
- Lester Hollander Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching, 2000.
- Lowell Beal Award for Advancing the Educational and Humanitarian interests of Internal Medicine Doctors in training, 1988, 1993, and 1999.
- Outstanding Physician Recognition Award by The Permanente Medical Group, 1991.
On a personal note, I spend most of my time with my 2 young sons. We spend our time reading, travelling, outdoor camping, studying Tae Kwon Do, learning and playing trumpet, playing and coaching youth baseball and basketball, and enjoying astronomy.
