My Simple Message for Healthy Living

Don’t smoke. Don’t use drugs. Make an effort to enjoy your work and your life everyday. Walk a little bit everyday. Weigh yourself every morning. When stressed, find a quiet place, sit and meditate (or just sit) for 15 minutes by yourself. When not stressed, do the same!

If you are a patient in our ED:

We have several goals:

  • Treat you with courtesy and respect, listening to your concerns.
  • Diagnose and treat any emergency conditions.
  • Work with you to assure follow-up care as needed.

We will do everything possible to take care of you promptly. In the ER however, delays can sometimes occur. Because many patients require tests, treatments, and time to observe for any changes in their condition, the average length of stay for patients in our ER is about 4 hours. When sicker patients arrive, it is necessary to promptly stabilize them first, which can result in delays for other patients who have less serious conditions. Our ED staff will do everything possible to take care of you as quickly as we can. We appreciate your patience and cooperation.

About me

I joined The Permanente Medical Group in 1989 to work with Kaiser Permanente. I have served as the chief of the Sacramento and Roseville Emergency Departments since 1995. When I am not working in the ER, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two teenage kids, exercising, golfing, hiking, running, reading, and seeing movies. I have lived in many places including India, L.A., Boston, Cincinnati, New York and Arizona before coming to Sacramento. I have traveled to Alaska, Canada, Australia, Europe (Germany, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Austria, and Switzerland), Mexico, Costa Rica, and many places in the U.S.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
