A Little Background Information

I grew up in Los Angeles, California. I did my undergraduate education at UC Santa Barbara. I then married my high school sweetheart and went to Medical School in Chicago, Illinois at FUHS/The Chicago Medical School. We came back to California where I did my internship and residency at University of California, Davis Medical Center, Sacramento. I have maintained a clinical faculty appointment at UC Davis as Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

I joined The Permanente Medical Group in 2001. I am the chief for Pediatric Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and I am board certified in facial plastics and reconstructive surgery. A very large majority of my practice is devoted to pediatric head and neck surgery which includes cleft lip and palate and craniofacial surgery,microtia surgery,facial plastic and reconstruction, airway (laryngeal and tracheal) reconstruction, and sinus surgery.

I am part of the northern California Kaiser regional craniofacial panel that is comprised of a group of specialists taking care of children with cleft lip, cleft palate and craniofacial problems. The craniofacial/cleft panel is a multidisciplinary group of medical providers geared toward comprehensive and coordinated care for the patient. With the department of Genetics, we have started an intake craniofacial clinic in Sacramento for our local area patients with cleft and craniofacial problems. We have genetics, speech pathology, nurse coordinators, head and neck surgery, and plastic surgery on our intake panel. I am also involved with a sinusitis workgroup that develops guidelines for sinusitis in children and adults for the northern California Kaiser region.

My Healthcare Practice

I enjoy all aspects of my practice as an otolaryngologist – head and neck surgeon. I am able to treat men and women of all ages with many different problems of the head and neck. I especially enjoy my large practice as a pediatric otolaryngologist including cleft lip and palate and craniofacial and congenital deformities, airway (larynx and trachea)reconstruction, otologic (ear) problems, and sinus problems. I also maintain a large adult practice treating many head and neck problems including head and neck cancer surgery, laryngeal (voice) surgery, chronic sinus surgery, ear surgery (including hearing loss, cholesteatoma, otosclerosis), trauma surgery, thyroid surgery, and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.

I chose to go into the field of otolaryngology because it is probably the best mix of both medicine and surgery. As a head and neck surgeon, we are primarily surgeons with a large part of our practice treating patients in the office with medical therapies. I really enjoy this aspect of my practice whereby I am able to follow patients for a long time and build long-lasting relationships.

Receiving Your Healthcare From Kaiser Permanente

One of the advantages of the Kaiser system is the team approach. Physicians, medical assistants, nurses, and support staff all work in a team fashion to provide the best care for the patients. In addition, there is no financial incentive or disincentive one way or the other for physicians in treating patients. I recommend therapy and surgery for patients if I feel they are needed. I am able to place the patient’s interests first.

We have an outstanding head and neck surgery department and have a team approach toward medicine. We often work together both in the office getting an instant second opinion or advice on a difficult problem, and in the operating room whereby the patient often has two experienced surgeons performing their surgery. The best possible care for the patient is our goal and we work together to achieve it.

My Outside Interests

When I’m not working I enjoy golf, tennis, and having fun with my wife and three girls.
