Personal
I enjoy reading; mostly nonfiction, but my favorite book is fiction, "Catch 22" by Joseph Heller. I like to write, enjoy skiing and spending time with my family. I have run three marathons in the past (way past); my most enjoyable was the New York City Marathon. Unfortunately I'm not in that kind of shape anymore (I use the kids as an excuse). I have three children, two boys and one girl. Of course they are all exceptional!!
I am originally from the New York City area; sometimes my accent gives me away. However, it has been somewhat diluted by spending time in Buffalo, Boston, and the Bay Area. I feel education should be a continuing process throughout life. I just finished an MBA online (The George Washington University) and I found that very interesting!
Professional
Since April 2004, I have been Chief of Head and Neck Surgery.
I would never work for any other health organization. I strongly believe in what Kaiser Permanente stands for and am very proud to be a physician for the health plan as well as a member.
I was trained as a dentist before becoming a physician. I attended the State University of New York at Buffalo. That is where I met my wife. I feel that having the knowledge of dentistry has really helped me in my specialty.
I truly love being a head and neck surgeon, because I am able to treat a broad range of patients (age and gender). I find that diversity very interesting. Also, I feel, head and neck surgeons have many ways to both surgically and medically help improve the quality of life for our members. I believe in treating all of my patients as if they were part of my family.
Another reason I enjoy my profession is that I like to teach and listen. I think a large part of being a physician, of any type, is to teach your patients about their bodies and then listen to them! I encourage patients to bring items from the Internet. I enjoy showing models and diagrams in the office. By listening to my patients and teaching what I know about the head and neck area, the experience in the office hopefully leads to better understanding for the patient, and often reduces anxiety.
