Aftercare Instructions - Permanent Nail Removal
Aftercare Instructions - Permanent Nail Removal
1 - Remove original bandage 12 to 18 hours after the procedure. If the gauze is stuck to the toe, soak it in lukewarm water then gently lift it off.
2 - Soak the toe in lukewarm water for 3-5 minutes; three times per day at first then twice a day as it calms down. Use plain tap water or epsom salts.
3 - Pat the area dry with a clean towel then put two of the prescription drops into the groove where the base of the nail used to be.
4 - Cover with a bandaid - the fabric kind are best since they breathe and don't cause the surrounding skin to turn white.
5 - Continue the soaks and drops with a bandaid until there is no more drainage.
Continued Drainage
Normally the drainage will stop in 1-2 weeks. Occasionally inflamed tissue will plug up the area and keep it from draining. When this happens the area will become more irritated or may drain for more than two weeks. Use a soapy washcloth to gently massage the area out toward the tip of the toe. Do not use hydrogen peroxide since it will further irritate the healing tissue.
Signs of Infection
Redness around the nail is a normal response to the acid burn. If redness spreads up the toe there may be an infection. Other signs of infection are creamy yellow pus, increased swelling and increased pain. If these symptoms occur call the Podiatry Department at 651-1051 M-F 8:30 - 5:00. We are closed for lunch from 12:30 - 1:30.
