What I Do

As a pathologist, I spend a lot of time looking through a microscope at tissues and cells removed from patients for diagnostic purposes. I chose this specialty because it allows me to use my visual and manual skills.

I completed both my medical degree and residency at the University of California, Davis. I am board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology by the American Board of Pathology and joined the Permanente Medical Group in 1996.

Before joining Kaiser Permanente I was in private practice with Pathology Services, Inc. in western Sonoma County, Lake County and Mendicino County. Prior to that, I was an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas-Houston Medical School in the Texas Medical Center.

I joined Kaiser Permanente because, having been a surgery resident at UC Davis Medical Center before entering pathology training, I found that Kaiser seemed to have the best surgeons in the Sacramento area and I wanted to work with them. I enjoy working here because of the collegial atmosphere, high level of both the medical staff and the practice of medicine and being part of an integrated medical care delivery system, which makes it easier to provide high quality care for our patients.

My particular areas of interest include pulmonary pathology and pathology of the male and female reproductive tracts. I also enjoy teaching and won several teaching awards during my tenure at The University of Texas-Houston Medical School.

I feel that keeping current with advances in pathology is important; therefore, I belong to the following international and national organizations:

US and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP);

American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP); and

College of American Pathologists (CAP).

My Outside Interests

I pole vault. I competed at UC Irvine and have continued to compete into my late 40's. I have won two USA Track & Field (USATF) Masters Division National Indoor Championships (1993 & 1996). My last big jump was at the Pole Vault Summit in 2000, when I cleared 14'0".

Occasionally I coach pole vaulters, and so far all my athletes (both of them) have gone on to the CIF State Championship Meet and on to a major NCAA Division I track and field program. One won the Big East Conference pole vault championship in 2004.

I am on the medical advisory staff for USATF Pole Vault Development (aka: North American Pole Vault Association). I am on the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) subcommittees for testing standards for pole vault headgear and pole vault equipment and facilities.

I am a certified USATF official and often officiate at the Modesto Relays. I also have done some work for USATF High Performance, helping videotape the pole vault competitions during the 2004 USA Olympic Track and Field Trials in Sacramento.

My favorite professional sports team is the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League. Below is their old logo, which was consistently rated as one of the best in all of hockey. In 2003 they changed the logo to a crummy one which resembles clipart, so I will show the good one:

The current coach of the NHL Dallas Stars, Dave Tippett, was an Aero. The Aeros won their first Calder Cup Championship in 2003.

I also two-step and play classical guitar.
