Welcome, my name is Alexander Locke, MD. I was born in Great Falls, Montana, but my family has deep roots in California. Over a century ago, my great-grandfather homesteaded in Inyo County. He even drove a 20-mule team! The family moved in the early 1900’s to central California. My grandmother played clarinet in a group called the Laurelei Syncopators in the “Roaring 20’s”.

I have lived in Sacramento since 1972 except when I attended college and medical school. I can remember in high school driving past a big empty field going to my dad's office across from Methodist Hospital. Little did I know I'd be spending my career at the Medical Center built on that field! I like the fact that Sacramento is my home, though I miss the way traffic used to be back then...

I was an exchange student in Germany in high school, and went on to do a Master’s degree in German Literature while attending Stanford University.

My Credentials

Medical school Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN
Residency UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, CA
Board certification Obstetrics and Gynecology, American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology

We at Kaiser Permanente are dedicated to the goal of helping keep our members healthy. I see my role as a physician advisor to help guide you through the difficult and perplexing choices available in health care today. The web is a wealth of information (and misinformation!). No one can possibly know everything, and medicine is constantly changing. I hope the information and links on my home page will help answer your questions and give you some of the advice you seek.

If you have further questions, there is a wealth of printed materials available in the OB/GYN Clinic and the Health Education Department in our facility. One particularly helpful reference is the Menopause booklet; it anticipates and answers many common questions. Our Prenatal Gazettes are a good reference for pregnancy, as is "What to Expect When You're Expecting". The Healthwise Handbook is a good reference for common medical problems and includes advice about when to call us. If you have general medical questions, these should be handled by the Internal Medicine Department, either through members.kp.org or by calling 688-2106.

If you need to contact me, please call the OB/GYN Department at 688-2055 to leave me a message. Some days I am in the Operating Room or Labor and Delivery; if you leave a message, it can be addressed by the Department.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
