About Me

Welcome to my home page! I would like to tell you a little bit about me. I was born in Maryland as a Navy brat, but eventually settled in Santa Monica, California, where I attended elementary school until my family went to Rome, Italy, for a four year stay. We returned to Santa Monica where I completed high school and then went on to the University of California, Irvine, for my undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences.

Not being accepted into medical school, I attended both San Diego State University and California State University, Northridge, as a graduate student. At last, I went to the Universidad Autonoma De Guadalajara, Guadalajara, Mexico.

After graduation, I went to the New York College of Medicine in Valhalla, New York, where I did my Fifth Pathway (a requirement for American-born foreign medical graduates). From New York, I returned to Children's Hospital of Los Angeles where I completed my internship and first year of residency. I came to Children's Hospital of Oakland to finish my last year of residency. While there, I began moonlighting for The Permanente Medical Group in 1981 at both the Oakland and Walnut Creek facilities doing both outpatient and inpatient work. I was very impressed by the philosophy of working to keep our children well and safe. I liked the fact that Kaiser Permanente pediatricians would and could see their own patients on a regular basis, without cost restrictions, and when I was seeing a patient, the only job I had was to practice the best medicine I was capable of practicing. I was unrestricted in ordering whatever test, study or medication that I thought was necessary for my children and I had readily available consultation from colleagues or specialists.

After completing my formal training, I became a career pediatrician with the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group. Other than becoming a pediatrician, this is the second-best career choice I have made in my life.

Soon after the Kaiser Permanente Pleasanton Medical Offices opened in April, 1983, I joined the staff there, where I currently continue my outpatient practice. I still do inpatient work at Walnut Creek Medical Center and transport call for our Intensive Care Nursery. I also have administrative responsibilities as Chief of the Department of Pediatrics for our seven outpatient sites in the Diablo Service Area.

My wife and I have four young adult children and an elementary school-age child. We enjoy our youngest child's school and sports activities. I enjoy jogging and refereeing soccer, and, when I stop, I like to read.

I have been privileged and honored over my almost two and a half decades of being a pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente to take care of a couple generations of children. My joy has been to watch them grow up healthy, wiser, and moving on in their adult lives, having made good decisions and choices. My last visit with them after they graduate from high school is always bitter-sweet, and often ends in tears. However, having been here so long, I am now seeing them back with their own children!
