About Me

I know exactly when I decided to become a doctor.

In college, I majored in economics. After my junior year, I took a management internship at Citibank in New York City. I was on my way to a career in banking and business when my supervisor fell ill. I took flowers from my work group over to her at New York Hospital. When I was in the hospital, I felt pulled to be there helping sick people. When I stepped outside, I was sure. I decided to be a doctor while waiting to cross the street outside New York Hospital.

After my senior year at Princeton University, I went to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and then I headed for Duke University in Durham, North Carolina to study internal medicine. I loved internal medicine but I discovered something even more interesting when I found that dermatologists were the detectives among doctors, solving diagnostic mysteries without tests and x-rays. Dermatology attracts problem-solvers, and it attracted me. After I finished my internal medicine residency, I went into dermatology training. I stay current in and practice dermatology.

In 1983, I came to work at Kaiser Permanente in Walnut Creek and the brand new Pleasanton facility. My children grew up within two miles of our Pleasanton facility. I windsurf, mountain bike, and ski. On summer weekends, I can be found hanging on to one of the many colorful windsurfing sails seen north of the San Mateo Bridge or up in the Delta.

My wife quilts. My kids snowboard and wakeboard. Because they snowboard, my family has had a chance to see how good Kaiser Permanente is at providing health care when accidents happen, and we will forever be grateful Kaiser Permanente health plan members.

I am proud to be a part of Kaiser Permanente because I share the organization's values of innovation, education, and health. Kaiser Permanente does what is good for your health and that is good for me as a practicing physician as well as a member. We have great continuing medical education for physicians and fabulous health education for members. I enjoy teaching dermatology to nurse practitioners from the University of California, San Francisco School of Nursing, as I have for many years. Two of my students came to work here after graduation. I also enjoy volunteering when the opportunity arises.

It has been a unique opportunity to be a part of our wonderful Pleasanton facility from its first year to today. It is still a terrific place to work and to receive care.
