About Me
I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and decided on a career in medicine for a number of reasons. I have always had an interest in science and have a number of relatives who are physicians. The unbridled pleasure they received in helping ease suffering, coupled with my own serious bout with mastoiditis at age nine, led me to a profession where I could make a difference in people's lives. I have never regretted this decision.
I have been a Kaiser Permanente physician for more than 25 years. The emotional and intellectual support that I get from my colleagues and the ability to make clinical decisions based mainly on need and not profit margins have made me cherish my time here. Over the past 25 years I have become increasingly convinced that I am privileged to work for the best health care organization on the planet.
As a psychiatrist, my major interest is the integration of physical and psychological aspects of each person. For example, treatment of depression is much easier if my clients exercise, maintain an ideal weight, and eat healthily. I currently serve as Associate Chief of Psychiatry for the Diablo Service Area and have also served as the Chief of Chemical Dependency.
I live in Pleasant Hill with my wife Amy and my young son Marshall. My personal interests include bike riding, astronomy, and playing soccer and basketball with my son.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
