About Me

I grew up in a small town in New Mexico, where my father was a pharmacist and owned a drug store. Living in the medical environment, it was natural that I wanted to become a physician, as that was considered the best that one could become. After doing an elective in my senior year of medical school in dermatology, I discovered that I thoroughly enjoyed practicing that kind of medicine: you could usually figure out what was wrong with the patient by just looking at the rash or growth, and not have to put the person through invasive testing to get the answer. After I finished my residency, I joined another dermatologist at Kaiser Permanente in Martinez who I knew from medical school, and have been here ever since (more than 23 years and counting!) I think Kaiser Permanente offers the best environment for the physician to practice in - excellent support staff and physicians to refer to, plus the freedom to practice as I wish without having to deal with the hassles of insurance authorizations and paperwork. Everything is under one roof, with pharmacy and medical records online. Clinically, I have a special interest in skin cancer and photobiology.

Outside of medicine, being visually oriented, I collect California landscape paintings, and Arts & Crafts decorative arts. I live in a 1910 Arts & Crafts bunaglow and have enjoyed restoring it back to a period look. Additionally, I enjoy travel and weight training.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
