About Me
Having grown up in Los Altos, California, I've always considered the Bay Area as my home. My father was the C.E.O. at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View and the exposure that I had to my father's work and the hospital fostered my interest in medicine. After graduating from Los Altos High School, I went to the University of the Pacific where I majored in chemistry and biology. After college I did some traveling in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union and went to Argentina twice to visit my fiancé. We were married in 1977. We're still married and my wife is an astronomer at University of California, Berkeley.
I went to medical school at the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in Pomona, California. Osteopathic medicine emphasizes primary care and treating the 'whole person'. I decided to go into family practice and completed my residency at the University of Nevada, Reno. After residency I moved back to Los Altos and was on the medical staff at El Camino Hospital but my real interest was in psychiatry. I attended the psychiatric residency program at San Mateo County Medical Center. After graduation I took a faculty position at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and worked in the psychiatric emergency room at San Francisco General Hospital for ten years. I was an Associate Clinical Professor at U.C.S.F. and enjoyed my involvement in the clinical teaching of medical students and residents. I also had an interest in aerospace medicine so I joined the Air National Guard/ U.S.A.F. Reserves and served as a flight surgeon with the 129th Rescue Wing and was later attached to the 60th Medical Squadron at Travis Air Force Base.
I left UCSF/SFGH to join Kaiser Permanente in 2001. I enjoy working with my colleagues in Walnut Creek and I am very impressed by the integration of medical services and the use of information technology at Kaiser Permanente.
I enjoy spending my spare time with my family, playing the guitar, and skiing.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
