Simple Skin Care Tips
The skin is the largest and one of the most important protective organs of the body. Treat it with care. Here are a few tips about sun protection and skin care.
Remember, sun protection prevents skin cancer, so use sunscreen liberally, cover with a wide-brimmed hat and wear proper clothing, even when it is overcast outside. The best sunscreens are broad-spectrum, which means that they protect against a variety of the sun's rays. I recommend using sunscreen with physical blocking properties, such as those with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. You should use plenty of sunscreen; studies have shown that people only use 1/3 of what is needed to achieve the suggested SPF levels. Also, reapply it often, every 2 hours during perspiration or swimming. It is never too late or too early in life to protect yourself from the sun. Sun protection not only prevents skin cancer, but it can also help prevent wrinkles!
Often rashes such as eczema, as well as dry skin alone, can be improved markedly if the skin is properly moisturized and treated tenderly. For the body and for the face, use a gentle soap such as Dove, Purpose, or Cetaphil. It is best to use warm, not hot water, to rinse. After rinsing, pat the skin dry, and moisturize with a good skin cream such as Cetaphil cream or Eucerin cream. For very dry skin, use vaseline or Aquaphor. You should moisturize at least twice a day. For those patients with acne, try using a non-comedogenic product (read the label). Of course, rashes that don't improve with simple measures may need medical attention.
