I was born in Mumbai (Bombay), India and came to the United States for my undergraduate education. I first attended Fresno City and then transferred to the University of California, Irvine where I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences. I continued my education at University of California, Irvine College of Medicine and received my Medical Degree in 1989. During my years at University of California, Irvine, I received many honors including appointment to the Dean’s Honor List, the President’s Undergraduate Research Fellowship, and the University of California, Irvine Excellence in Research Award. After medical school, I completed an Internal Medicine residency, including a year serving as Chief Resident, at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center at Santa Clara.
I joined The Permanente Medical Group in 1993 after completing my residency program. Since then, I have enjoyed my clinical practice. The relationships that I have built with my patients during my career have been very special. In addition I have filled many administrative roles. Currently, I am the Chief of the Department of Medicine at our Campbell Medical Offices. I serve on our Hospital Ethics Committee and am a Director of The Permanente Medical Group in Oakland.
I am also active outside of Kaiser and have been a past recipient of the Physician Community Service Award at Kaiser Santa Clara. I hold membership in several professional associations including the American College of Physicians, the Santa Clara County Medical Association, the California Medical Association and the American Association of Bioethics and Humanities. Currently I serve on the Santa Clara County Medical Association's Executive Committee, and have been the past Chair of their Bioethics Committee. I have lectured on various Bioethics topics and have been on the Voluntary Clinical Faculty of Stanford Medical School.
In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, reading, playing tennis and racquetball, and volunteering at the Julian Street Homeless Shelter. I speak Marathi and Hindi. I want to be certain that all of your concerns are addressed. If you forget to ask a question during your visit, you may reach me through secure e-mail on KP.org, “Email Your Doctor”.
