My Biography

Namaste and Hello! I was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to parents who immigrated from India, and was raised in the South Jersey/Philadelphia area. I moved to Michigan after elementary school and earned my Bachelor of Arts Degree with concentrations in History and Biomedical Sciences from the University of Michigan in 1993, and my Medical Degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1997. I continued my medical training at Detroit Receiving Hospital/Detroit Medical Center.

Since I joined Kaiser Permanente in 2000, I have been an active member of the Emergency Department at Kaiser Hayward and Fremont. I have participated in the Kaiser Culturally Competent Care Committee, Disaster Preparedness Committee, Recycling Task Force, Acute Myocardial Infarction (heart attack) Committee, Core Measures Committee, and Procedural Sedation Committee. In my first two years here, I was awarded the Kaiser Hero Award, the Kaiser Community Service Award, & the Kaiser Asian Association Award, and in 2003 was awarded the Everday Hero Award.

Also, I serve on the Board of Directors, and Chair the Disaster Subcommittee, of the American Academy for Emergency Medicine in India - a group which I founded. Additionally, I am on the Executive Committee of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin San Francisco/San Jose/Fremont Bay Area chapter. As an active member of the U.S. Bay Area Disaster Medical Assistance Team (now part of the Homeland Security Dept.), I served for 2 weeks at the World Trade Center site doing medical work after the terrorist attack. I went to Ukraine in June 2004 with the California Emergency Medicine Services Authority to help train Ukrainians in Disaster Management. After the terrible earthquake in 2001 I served in medical relief camps in Gujarat, India . During January and February 2005, I volunteered in Sri Lanka to help in tsunami relief as part of Kaiser Permanente's Sri Lanka Tsunami Relief Project. You will find photos and more information by using the link to the left. My special interests are in disaster medicine, international emergency medicine, medicine of developing countries, & cultural and spiritual aspects of medicine.

I enjoy travelling, the outdoors, nature, eating various vegetarian foods, collecting stamps and old books and magazines, and reading old novels and National Geographic. Strongly believing in community service, I am involved in environmental causes locally, interfaith dialogue, rural development in India, youth education, and Indian and Hindu community activities. I hold leadership positions in various community organizations and serve on the East Bay Regional Parks Advisory Committee. I am founder and President of both the Hindu American Foundation and Democracies Against Terror. In addition to English, I speak Gujarati and some Hindi and French.

My broad Hindu religious and cultural upbringing has taught me to believe in ''Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam'' - The Whole Universe is One Family, and ''Ekam Sat Viprah Bahudha Vadanti'' - Truth is One, Sages Call it by Various Names. I strongly believe in cultural and religious pluralism, acceptance, and tolerance. Additionally, I feel there are many ways to look at life and spirituality.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
