Common Childhood Infections

Kids and Germs
Colds, ear infections, croup, sore throats, and intestinal viruses account for many visits to my office. Sometimes a prescription medicine can help your child recover more quickly. Other times, you can safely and competently take care of your child at home. Hopefully, clicking below for advice on colds and ear infectons or the internet sites below can help you decide whether or not you need to call for an appointment. If unsure, call 784-4190 and ask to speak to an advice nurse.

Information Sources
Another great reference for health information is Kaiser's Health Encyclopedia.

All families should have one. If you do not, please call 1-800-207-5084 to obtain one. Other useful sources available at your local bookstore or library are Your Child's Health by Schmitt, or Caring for Your Baby and Young Child by Shelov.

There are articles on many children's health problems on the Pediatric Health Information site.

Disclaimer
If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
