About Me
I am a licensed clinical psychologist who has been in the Chemical Dependency Services program in the department of mental health at Kaiser Permanente Walnut Creek, California since 1992. Prior to coming to Kaiser Permanente, I worked for many years as a staff psychologist and eating disorder researcher at Stanford University Medical Center in both the Behavioral Medicine Clinic and the Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center. Additionally, I have maintained a private practice in Berkeley since 1987.
In addition to my clinical work, I have published numerous articles (and a book chapter)on the treatment of eating disorders and on the mental health issues of musicians and artists. Along those lines, I am on the Editorial Board of the Performing Arts Medicine Association journal, Medical Problems of Performing Artists. With my colleague Eric Maisel, I am co-writing a book on addiction recovery and creativity for Shambhala Publications (Fall, 2008).
My Philosophy of Care
I feel that working as a psychologist is both a privilege and a responsibility. My philosophy of care is to work in a collaborative relationship with my clients, to maintain the hope and “big picture” for them when they cannot see it. I support their strengths as they work with me to heal their vulnerabilities. Kaiser Permanente provides a rewarding environment in which I have continued to grow and learn, both from working with a wide variety of people from all walks of life, and also from interacting with a wonderful group of dedicated professionals.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
