Welcome!

Thank you for visiting my home page. Currently I am in the process of adding useful links to this site. In the mean time, please consider visiting the home page of my colleague, Dr. Mark Cohen, who is a developmental pediatrician at Santa Clara. His page contains information about many useful resources. I am grateful to Dr. Cohen for allowing me to share this information along with his description of developmental pediatrics as written in part below.

Biography

As a developmental pediatrician, I evaluate and monitor children with known or suspected problems such as developmental delay, speech and language delay, mental retardation, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, learning disorders, autism, and genetic disorders. I also work with a team that helps to monitor the developmental progress of premature babies and other children at higher risk.

I am board-certified in Pediatrics and became eligible for certification in the subspecialty of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics after completing my fellowship in June, 2006. Subspecialty board certification is anticipated in early 2007 after the once-yearly certification examination.

My focus is on helping pediatricians to detect children who may have developmental problems and to coordinate the care of such children. I provide the expertise and backup to help assure that children with developmental disorders have an effective and comprehensive "medical home" with their primary care provider.

I also make every effort to educate and support the parents and caretakers of children with developmental disorders, since they are the real experts when it comes to their children.

I was born in California and grew up in Hawaii. I graduated Cum Laude from Princeton University in 1994 and received my M.D. degree from University of California, San Francisco in 2000. I completed my pediatric residency at University of California Davis Medical Center in 2003. In 2006 I completed a fellowship in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics at University of California Davis Medical Center jointly with the University of California Davis M.I.N.D. Institute. I am a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Society for Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics and certified in Pediatrics and in Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics.

I feel very fortunate to be able to practice developmental pediatrics. To participate in the care of children and their families is a great privilege and honor. Children bring so much into this world. They are so hungry for new experiences and accomplishments, and I especially enjoy trying to see the world through their eyes as they change over time. Children with developmental problems and the families of these children face special challenges. I am honored to accompany these children and their families along their journeys.

Another thing I like about the specialty of developmental pediatrics is the opportunity to work with teachers, therapists, and community agencies in order to improve the care of my patients. Although everyone who serves children presumably strives to serve the best interests of children, sometimes we can help each other to better achieve this goal by working together. My non-medical interests include woodworking, gardening, knitting, improving my Spanish language competence, and studying Japanese.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
