About Me
I grew up in Studio City, California. My father is a dentist and my mother is a psychotherapist, and they encouraged me to choose a career that would give me personal satisfaction and one in which I could help others. I've always had an interest in science and I've always enjoyed helping others, so medicine seemed like a natural way for me to use science to help people. One summer break in college I decided to be a camp counselor at Bearskin Meadow Camp (a sleep-away camp sponsored by the Diabetic Youth Foundation). Through my experiences at diabetes camp, I realized that I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, and most likely in Pediatrics. After graduating from college I taught nutrition lessons to second and third grade children in the Bay Area, and this work confirmed my decision to be a physician.
I truly enjoy being a pediatrician. I like working with people, teaching patients about how their bodies work, and teaching them how to take care of their bodies when they aren't working well. It's rewarding to watch my young patients grow up and become healthy adults.
My Philosophy about Practicing Medicine
- I focus on taking steps to prevent diseases before they develop.
- I only prescribe medicines to my patients when the potential benefits of taking prescription medicines outweigh the side effects and other costs.
- I believe treatment plans ideally incorporate the whole family, since pediatric health problems often affect the whole family to some extent.
I enjoy what I do, and I'm glad to be working for Kaiser Permanente. Here we can focus on disease prevention rather than just after-the-fact treatment of disease, we're committed to providing high quality health care, and we're working in a system with easy access to patients' health information on the computer.
My clinical interests are Type 1 diabetes mellitus and childhood obesity. On the left hand side of my page are links to good information on these and other topics. If you want information on a specific topic, try a search using the Health Encyclopedia.
I'm a family man, and I love spending time at home with my wife, sons and dog. I love discussing the latest medical topics in the news with my wife, who is also a physician (we met in medical school). I particularly like outdoor activities like walking the dog, running, hiking, mountain biking, backpacking, camping, snow skiing, and water skiing. I also enjoy learning about other cultures through foreign travel.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
