What is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.)?

My Specialty and Why I Chose it

I am an orthopedic surgeon which means I specialize in treating injuries and conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system: bones, joints, tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. I enjoy all aspects of orthopedic surgery but I especially enjoy the challenging field of adult reconstructive surgery which involves total joint replacements in patients who have osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and traumatic arthritis.

My Credentials

Medical school Western University of Health Sciences, Pomona, CA
Internship Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, Colton, CA
Residency Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Philadelphia, PA
Fellowship Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia, PA
Board certification Orthopedic Surgery, Am Osteo Board of Orthopedic Surgery

My Practice Philosophy

I enjoy spending time with my patients and educating them to help them make informed decisions about their treatment and care. My goal as an orthopedic surgeon is to promote health, healing, reduction of pain and an increase in function thereby increasing my patients' quality of life. My treatment methods and options are based upon the medical literature and on evidenced-based medicine. I am always happy to discuss the various treatment options available and the pros and cons of all of them. Although I am a surgeon, I will try nonsurgical treatment options whenever possible.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I have been a part of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group since 2005. I joined Kaiser after completing my orthopedic surgery residency and my adult reconstructive fellowship.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

I enjoy practicing at Kaiser Permanente because it allows me the freedom to care for my patients without having to spend my day worrying about all of the financial pressures of practice. I have the ability to use any equipment or implant I feel will help my patients best. I work with a great group of doctors who are truly committed to their patients well-being. The orthopedic surgeons in our group are truly experts in our field. This is a huge advantage for our patients because of our ability to collaborate and consult with each other to obtain the best outcomes for our patients.

My Professional Affiliations and Interests

My interests include all aspects of orthopedic surgery from pediatric fractures to orthopedic trauma. My special interest though is in adult reconstructive surgery. I am a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, the American Osteopathic Association, Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of California, the California Medical Association, and the Placer-Nevada County Medical Association

On a Personal Note…

I grew up on a small ranch in Loma Rica California just outside of Marysville. After graduating from Marysville High School I attended the University of California Davis and graduated with a degree in Microbiology. After medical school, my orthopedic surgery residency was completed under the direction of Dr. John McPhilemy D.O., team doctor of the Philadelphia 76ers; my fellowship training was completed under the direction of Dr. Robert Booth, Dr. David Nazarian, and Dr. Jess Lonner. Once my medical training was completed, I wanted to return home to northern California and joining Kaiser Permanente afforded me this opportunity.

I am also fluent in German and in my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, working out, snow boarding, classic muscle cars and working on my dad’s ranch.
