My Biography

After completing my vascular fellowship in Boston, I chose to work at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco for two reasons. One is location--the proximity to family and living in San Francisco. The second is the people. We have a strong core vascular unit here, and I see the opportunity to build upon it a stronger one that will serve as a model for vascular groups not just within Kaiser Permanente. This can certainly be accomplished with the leadership and resources that are already present here. I serve as Chief of Vascular Surgery.

What I enjoy most is also what has surprised me most since joining Kaiser Permanente: that there’s a wealth of complex vascular cases here. I like the wide spectrum of vascular surgery, but I have a particular interest in thoracic and abdominal aortic pathology. I enjoy providing minimally-invasive endovascular solutions to complex vascular problems, whether this is done in the interventional suite or in the operating room. As vascular specialty evolves, with vascular specialists leading the way, the boundaries to where these cases are performed will blend and dissolve, and this will ultimately be to the benefit of the patient.

I think Kaiser Permanente has it right in its approach to medicine. Preventive care is key to healthy living. Beyond that, medicine must be approached through an integrated system, and that is what Kaiser does best. I’ve found that there is excellent collaboration among specialties here, and patients get the whole package when they are cared for here at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco.

On a personal note, I was born in Viet Nam, but my childhood was spent mostly in Southern California. I thrive by staying active and spending time with my children. My hobbies are sports, traveling, and history.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
