I think my decision to enter medical practice choice was inspired by my mother; who worked as a nurse-anesthetist, in Muncie, Indiana, where I was born and grew up. Even as a little boy, I could see how much my mother loved her work. As I grew older, I also came to understand that Mom was personally and professionally challenged by her work, and felt that she was making a worthwhile contribution to our community in Muncie. So the decision was essentially made when I was a childóI decided when I was about six or so, that I would have a career in medicine; just like Mom. And that was that. I have always intended to be a physician; I tremendously enjoy my work, and really canít imagine doing anything else.
First and foremost, I like patient care. Thereís the intellectual and professional challenge of figuring out the best approach to caring for each individual patient, combined with the personal fulfillment that comes from of helping people feel betterówhich, to me, is the fundamental reason why weíre here. I also enjoy the collaborative nature of the medicine, and exchanging knowledge and ideas with other professionals here at Kaiser Permanente.
Of course, Iíve always had an interest in general internal medicine. I genuinely enjoy being able to address a variety of issues across the entire range of adult patients. Over the course of practicing, I have also developed an interest, and extensive experience, in HIV treatment and hormonal therapy for trans-gendered individuals. I am also interested in using proactive and preventive medicine to help maturing adults enjoy richer lives.
My practice philosophy is basically the same one my Mom had back in Muncie: make a contribution, be good to people, enjoy what you do, and help everybody. That about sums it up.
The tremendous diversity of the staff and patients is great; I get to meet and work with people from all over the world every day right here at Kaiser Permanente in Walnut Creek. It is extremely stimulating, and brings an entirely new dimension of enjoyment to practicing medicine. Along those lines, over the years that Iíve been practicing medicine Iíve been fortunate enough to work in a variety of settings with first-rate medical professionals: the staff and resources here at Kaiser Permanente are the best Iíve ever seen. What I like most, however, is that even though Kaiser Permanente is a huge organization, thereís still an absolute focus on individualized medical care. Nobody ever gets treated like Ďa numberí here, and all our patients get the same high standard of treatment. Thatís something thatís personally important to me, and definitely the best thing about working here.
I play golf, (badly). I also enjoy amateur astronomy, model trains, television, (especially really bad re-runs of old shows) and the arts. My partner and I live here in Contra Costa county with our three cats Castor, Pollux, and Antares.
