Chemical Peels
Please read and familiarize yourself with these instructions both before and after surgerythe chemical peel. By following them carefully, you will assist us in obtaining the best possible result. If questions arise, do not hesitate to communicate with us and discuss your questions at any time.
Please note that there are many different kinds of chemical peels and we can discuss these in greater detail in consultation. However, the peel we most commonly employ in our clinic is the Obagi Blue peel. The Obagi BLUE PEEL is a one to four step application of blue solution mixed with TCA (Trichloracetic Acid). These applications will lead to the removal of thin surface layers of aged and damaged skin. Layers of dead skin cells exfoliate and are replaced by healthier ones allowing the skin's own clarity and tightness to resurface.
BEFORE THE PEEL
1)The Obagi chemical peel requires preconditioning of the skin for at least six weeks prior to the peel. The full Obagi line of products is available in our cosmetic center.
2)Please note that for best results, it is important that you avoid sun exposure as much as possible during the weeks following the chemical peel. For this reason, many people prefer to undergo the peel during winter months.
3)Please refer to the list of medications not to take before you chemical peel. If you are taking any of these medications, it is important that you stop taking them during the specified times.
4)Please remember to bring the medications which we have prescribed for you on the day of your chemical peel. The acyclovir is an anti-viral medication that you should start taking two days before your chemical peel. You will need to continue taking it for five days after the procedure. All the other medications do not need to be started ahead of time but do need to be brought in on the day of the procedure.
5)Do not wear any clothing that you will need to pull over your head (ie. pullover sweaters, t-shirts, or turtlenecks). Please wear shirts or blouses that button down in the front. You should continue to do this during the first week after surgery as well.
6)Please arrange for a companion to drive you home after surgery.
AFTER THE PEEL
1)Continue to cleanse and care for your skin with the Obagi skin products. Your skin should start to peel over the next three to four days. It is very important that you allow the skin to peel naturally - do not pull off flakes of skin prematurely as this may cause abnormal color and contour changes in the skin.
2)It is normal for there to be some swelling and redness around the face and neck, This usually clears within ten days.
3)Take prescribed medications as directed. Pain medication is to be taken one tablet every four hours as needed for pain. Pain medication can be constipating, so you should take a stool softener and avoid constipating foods as necessary. Take the antibiotic medication as directed until you have finished the bottle. Finish the anti-viral medication. All medications should be taken with food to avoid upsetting your stomach.
4)Please limit sun exposure for at least one month after the peel, as this can cause skin color changes. If you need to go outdoors, please wear a large brim hat. You may also start applying sun block SPF 30 or greater after the first week.
