Is cosmetic surgery right for me?

You are the only one who can determine whether you should undergo a cosmetic procedure, but through the years, many surgeons have noted certain key factors that are associated with good and bad outcomes.

You are more likely to benefit from cosmetic enhancement if:

  1. You are happy with yourself and your life in general.
  2. You wish to rejuvenate your appearance, not drastically change it.
  3. You have discussed the procedure in detail with your doctor and you understand what to expect.
  4. You have carefully thought out the risks and benefits of the procedure and are willing to follow through with the post-operative healing and care.
  5. You have been thinking about having cosmetic enhancement for some time.
  6. You have friends and family who are supportive of your decision.
  7. You are doing this for yourself.

You are less likely to benefit from cosmetic enhancement if:

  1. You are hoping that cosmetic surgery will change your life.
  2. You want to drastically change the way you look.
  3. You do not have a good idea of the risks and benefits of the procedure and choose to leave such matters up to your plastic surgeon.
  4. You have not fully committed yourself to undergoing the procedure.
  5. You decide on a whim to undergo cosmetic enhancement.
  6. You are extremely concerned about maintaining your privacy - you feel it would be disastrous if anyone found out about your procedure.
  7. You are undergoing the procedure to make someone else happy.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
