Welcome…
My name is Anthony Abene, MD and I am a board-certified (American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery) Orthopaedic Surgeon. I am also a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. I created this web site to familiarize you with my Orthopaedic practice, dedicated staff, and the services we provide. Orthopaedics is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of injuries and diseases of your body's musculoskeletal system. This complex system includes your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves and allows you to move, work and be active. Whether you're making the decision for Orthopaedic care, or would just like to expand your knowledge, I hope this site helps you become more informed and more confident in the incredible realm of orthopaedic treatments available. Be sure to check out the patient information section at my personal Academy web site as well.
About Me…
I was born and raised in New Jersey, but became addicted to the California sunshine when the Air Force stationed me at Travis Air Force Base. My road to medicine started at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey where I graduated with honors. I went on to Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC where I graduated in 1994, also with honors. At Georgetown I was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. I then completed a five-year residency at the University of Pennsylvania and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. The next three years were spent with Uncle Sam and included assignments in Germany, the Azores, and the Persian Gulf. I received several decorations during this time including both the Army and Air Force Commendation Medals. During this time I was also appointed as a clinical professor in Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Additionally, I obtained my MBA in Health Care Administration from Touro University in Cypress, CA while still on active duty. After my honorable discharge I spent a year in a Sports Medicine fellowship at Stanford. I worked side by side with Drs Dillingham and Fanton learning cutting edge arthroscopic techniques. The fellowship allowed me to work with world class athletes including Stanford and Santa Clara on the collegiate level and the 49ers and Giants on the professional level. This has led to my clinical focus in Sports Medicine.
On a personal note, even though I love California, I am still a Jersey Guy (pronounce my last name “Ah-Ben-Ay”) at heart who somehow managed to marry a beautiful Jersey Girl. I still believe there is nothing better than Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, the Sopranos, and a hot plate of macaroni. Despite the fact that they will grow up in California my children have no choice but to root for the New York Yankees. Outside work my life rotates around my three children with weekends full of swimming, diving, ice hockey, and ballet.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
