Hope is the substance of things wished for, the evidence of things unseen.

I began the practice of pediatric critical care medicine twenty years ago in South Florida. When I began, the specialty was so young that there were only about 200 practicing pediatric intensivists in the United States. This is a very interesting field because we take care of infants who have gone home and need to be readmitted through teenagers. Any child who has a medical illness that worsens or a complicated surgery may need the expertise of a pediatric intensivist. The pediatric intensivist helps coordinate the care of the subspecialists who might include neurology, pulmonary, nephrology, gastoenterology, neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery or ear-nose and throat surgeons. These difficult cases are challenging but rewarding. This is often one of the most stressful periods for the families of these children. We work with social services to try to meet their needs as well as chaplain services. We keep our families informed about their child's progress and encourage them to ask questions.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
