My Biography

Thank you for taking the time to read about my background. I've been a life long member of Kaiser so I have a long term appreciation and understanding of how the Kaiser system works. I believe it is an excellent healthcare organization and offers advantages for both patients and providers alike. I chose to work at Kaiser because I enjoy being able to work in a team format with colleagues striving to deliver high quality care in an integrated and comprehensive fashion. I appreciate the excellent patient resources available at Kaiser such as Health Education and advice nurse services; the ease in making clinical referrals to other specialty providers and ancillary hospital services; as well as the wonderful professional relationships in my department. I also feel that the recent and ongoing information technology innovations have been very helpful. Finally, I appreciate the diversity of my clients here in our local area.

I chose a career in Psychiatry because I have a longstanding interest in understanding people and their behavior. Although I initially trained in other specialties, over time I realized that I wanted a career that would allow me to develop long term relationships with my patients and make meaningful improvements in their quality of life.

My practice style involves taking the time to make an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. Generally, I consider, when clinically appropriate, non-medication treatment approaches first. I also try to avoid high medication doses and multiple medications regimens which can cause side effects and problems. I should also mention that I am concerned about substance abuse and dependence issues, and therefore I am more conservative, when clinically appropriate, when prescribing potentially addictive medications such as benzodiazepines and stimulents. I will usually start out with non-habit forming meds if at all possible. I also believe in offering culturally sensitive healthcare to my patients.

As a board certified Psychiatrist, I treat the full range of psychiatric conditions for adults. I also have a research interest in deep brain stimulation for obsessive compulsive disorders and other conditions. In the recent past, I have served as an adjunctive clinical instructor with the San Mateo County Hospital psychiatry residency training program.

I am a San Francisco Bay Area native and have a strong interest in nutrition and plant-based diets. I also enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and tennis, as well as community involvement. I am semi-fluent in Mandarin Chinese.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
