My Background
I received my BS in Biology, MS in Pharmacology, and my MD all at the University of Hawaii. My wife and I moved to California in 1984 for my Internal Medicine Residency at Santa Clara Kaiser in 1984. I am board certified in Internal Medicine. I began my career as a staff internist at Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center in 1987. Between 1987 and 1997, I worked as an internist in the clinic and took care of my patients in the hospital. I also served as the medical director in the Spine Unit at Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center and Chief of Staff Education. In 1997, I was asked to develop a hospitalist program at Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center and have served as chief of the program since. The hospitalist program is a new specialty in internal medicine which consists of dedicated internists working only in the hospital to care for hospitalized patients with medical problems. The program has evolved from a 15 part-time internists to 25 internists dedicated to inpatient medicine. The benefits of developing a hospitalist program are to improve the quality of care and efficiency in hospitalized patients. I believe that we are achieving our goals.
About Me
I have been with Kaiser for 20 years and am happy to be part of a high quality medical care organization. I chose to come to Kaiser because I agree with the philosophy of the program. We are able to provide high quality medicine without the business influence. Our emphasis on preventive care is very important to maintain good health. Furthermore, at Kaiser, I am able to practice internal medicine to its fullest scope.
Besides internal medicine, I am very interested in acupuncture and complementary medicine. I have taken a course at UCLA to do medical acupuncture and have seen some very good results. At Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center, we have an excellent Spine unit which combined with our complementary medicine clinic offers acupuncture to our patients with chronic pain. I work there part-time and am proud to be associated with the clinic. Other than my clinical interest, my personal interest includes traveling, regular exercise, trying different ethnic food, and most importantly, spending time with my family.
My Recommendation
I believe that patients and health care providers need to work together to achieve wellness. Exercise regularly, eat wisely, relax frequently, and follow up regularly with your primary care provider to maintain good health.
