Coping with chronic illness

I was born at Kaiser Hospital, Oakland, and raised in Berkeley, California. My mother was a head nurse at Kaiser Oakland for many years. Her values — to provide kind, competent care — have become mine. My own Kaiser Pediatrician and Internist were also early role models. In 1984, I joined the Department of Medicine as an internal medicine and kidney disease doctor. About 10 years ago, we formed a Department of Nephrology, just for patients with kidney diseases, dialysis and transplants, of which I'm a member. I also currently serve as Assistant Physician-in-Chief and Chief of Quality.

Nephrology is a very technical field. Many diseases are chronic, but some can be cured with medication and we can give patients extra years of life with dialysis or transplant. I try to guide people through the difficulties of their illness by providing comfort and helping them understand their condition. Bottomline, treat people the way you want to be treated.

I am a member of the American College of Physicians and International Society of Nephrology. I’m married and have three daughters. In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, hiking and playing the piano, sometimes performing duets with a friend who’s a violinist. I speak and understand some Spanish.

Disclaimer
If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
