Introduction
I chose internal medicine as a specialty because that was always the image of a doctor that I had growing up, someone who took care of you when you were so sick you had to go to the hospital. As an internist and hospitalist my primary focus is on diseases of the adult and how to medically manage them in an inpatient, hospital setting. I enjoy the challenge of diagnosing and treating the numerous ailments that can bring people into the hospital, interacting with patients and family, and taking opportunities to provide them with information on health maintenance and prevention.
My Background
I was born in Shanghai, China and immigrated to the US when I was six. I grew up in Iowa and Michigan, later attending the University of Michigan for both undergraduate and graduate school, where I received a Masters degree in epidemiology. Then I moved to Chicago for four years of medical school, and then halfway across the country for three years of residency in California. Currently I am working at Kaiser Permanente as an inpatient hospitalist. My outside interests include camping/hiking, soccer, beach volleyball, cooking and barbecuing, and I am an avid reader in military history, anthropology and religion.
My Recommendations
Whoever said "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" is a genius. The American medical system focuses massive amounts of resources on medical treatment of diseases once people become symptomatic, but far too little is done to help keep patients from reaching that point in the first place. On the other hand, Kaiser Permanente is a well-known advocate of disease prevention and healthy living, and its patients tend to receive top notch care in both preventive medicine as well as follow-up chronic conditions. I encourage people to take full advantage of the numerous programs and classes (many of them free for memebers) that Kaiser offers to help keep people healthy in both mind and body.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
