About Me

I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I wanted to be a physician from a very young age. I always liked to learn about how life worked and wanted to be on the "leading edge" of health technology. My father, an anesthesiologist and an avowed "workaholic,” would occasionally take me on rounds or into the operating room to observe. He always said that the practice of medicine was "the science of probability and the art of uncertainty". I never quite knew what that meant but I always found our journeys to the hospital fascinating.

As a youngster I played bass guitar in a rock band and was an avid fan of the Milwaukee Braves baseball team. I also followed the world champion Green Bay Packers. To this day I still love music and sports.

I graduated college from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois with a major in biology and a minor in philosophy. I was pre-medical all the way, although I never knew exactly what kind of doctor I wanted to be. After college I traveled to Boulder Colorado for the summer and worked as a volunteer in the emergency room at Boulder General Hospital.

I attended medical school at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, class of 1978. During the summers I worked in a gas station and for a small traveling circus as a prop man. To satisfy my wanderlust I hitch-hiked and hopped freight trains around the United States and Canada. Such adventures were a lot safer in those times.

For my residency I applied to several places around the country but the Kaiser Permanente idea seemed like a very good one to me. No one I knew at the time had ever heard of a Health Maintenance Organization but I liked the concept of integrated health care and wanted to be a part of a large group of physicians working as a team. I did a year of residency as a general surgeon at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland before deciding that the emergency room was the place for me.

What I like about my work is that every day is different and challenging. I like solving puzzles. I like helping people. I like having an irregular schedule that is not routine. Kaiser Permanente allows me to focus on patient care without having to worry about administrative issues or staffing problems.

My clinical interests include alternative healing devices. In 1994 I went to Japan to the World Conference on Biomagnetism. Since then, I have collected several interesting gadgets for pain control and wound healing from around the world. In addition, I have an interest in handheld computers and have been active in developing a mobile medical database.

I have two children. We play lots of tennis and racket ball. When I'm not working I like to ride my mountain bike. I am also an avid reader of science fiction.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
