My Specialty and Why I Chose It

During my graduate studies at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, I learned about the field of genetic counseling. Genetic counselors educate and provide support to families and individuals who are at risk for genetic conditions. Because of my diverse personal and professional experiences and the opportunity to work with people, whether in public health education, clinical practice or both, the multidisciplinary practice of genetic counseling at Kaiser Permanente was the perfect fit for me. The field of genetic counseling is an ever-changing, challenging, and rewarding field, and my hope is to provide the best care to our patients and their families. I have been with the Kaiser Permanente Genetics team since 2005.

My Professional Interests and Affiliations

I am a full member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) and American Public Health Association (APHA). As well, I am part of the NSGC cancer special interest group and the international genetic counseling subcommittee. I became board certified through the American Board of Genetic Counseling in 2007.

On a Personal Note…

I was born in India and raised in the US. I grew up in Apple Valley, California located in the Mojave Desert. In 1991, I moved to Seattle, Washington and attended the University of Washington (UW) where I earned a BS in Biology (1996) and a MPH in Public Health Genetics (2000). GO DAWGS!! In 2005, I earned a MS in Genetic Counseling from the University of Pittsburgh.

Outside of work, I enjoy cycling, hiking, traveling, photography, and documenting these experiences through scrapbooking. In my free time, I volunteer on the Susan G. Komen Fresno Race for the Cure committee and raise money by participating in events such as the MS150 bike rides for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Finally, I love spending time with my husband, our daughter, family and friends.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
