Welcome to My Internet Home Page

I am proud to be a member of such an outstanding department and the medical group here at Kaiser Permanente Central Valley. I hope that we can always provide high quality of care and service to you.

About Me

I was born and raised in India, surrounded by wonderful family and friends. They tell me that as a young child, I always said, "When I grow up, I am going to become a doctor". Not surprising, since I come from a family of physicians! Although my parents have engineering and mathematics backgrounds, I was also much influenced by my aunts and uncle who were equally strong role models in my life. Their dedication and compassion along with the good will they generated played a big role in making my own career choices.

My specialty is pulmonary and critical care medicine. This means that I take care of people who have severe lung disease (pulmonary) and people who are very sick in the intensive care unit (critical care). I am board certified in American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine.

I received my medical degree from the prestigious Seth G.S. Medical College, Mumbai, India, one of the largest training hospitals in the country. Subsequently, I completed my internship, residency and fellowship at Drexel University College of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA. Treating patients and their families at what may be the most frightening time of their lives is both a challenge and an honor.

Kaiser Permanente was a natural choice for my family when we decided to move closer to family. It is such a well established organization with a commitment to provide quality care. Having time to interact with patients and their families, both in the outpatient office and especially in the ICU, is crucial in developing a strong physician-patient relationship that I very much value. I also reap the benefits of working with a group of very knowledgeable physicians who have similar goals for the organization and the way care is managed. More importantly, I have the luxury of being able to balance my career with my family life.

What you can expect from me

I believe knowledge is power.

During a consultation I typically attempt to explain how your lung is functioning, what improvements might be expected and review tests / X-rays/CT scans if available. Please feel very free to ask questions regarding what is known about your condition during your visit. I promise to be your best advocate.

I believe in building a relationship with my patients based on faith and trust and not merely on an exchange of service. Unfortunately, most lung diseases are more preventable and treatable, with only a few curable. I believe patients must take some responsibility for their health and start with quitting smoking as a first step. Tobacco kills more Americans each year than alcohol, cocaine, heroin, car accidents, homicide, suicides, fires and AIDS combined (US Department of Health and Human Services).

Family and Friends

After completing medical school in India (where I also met my husband!) I moved to Philadelphia to complete my residency and fellowship. My husband, Amit Parekh is an invasive cardiologist, who also works at the Stockton and Modesto Medical Offices. We have 2 young boys who fill our lives with fun and laughter. As there is more to life than just work, I try to divide my life fairly between medicine and my family in an effort to develop as a compassionate, dedicated medical expert, and concurrently a loving, caring mother and spouse.

Apart from English, I also speak Kannada, Telugu, Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati.

Hobbies and Interests

When I am not working, I love spending time with my boys, traveling, hiking and reading.

What I’m reading and browsing?

Nurture Shock, Ruskin Bond, P.G. Wodehouse
