About Me

I grew up in small mining town, in Superior, Arizona. After four years of college at the University of Arizona in Tucson I graduated with a double major in physics and chemistry and a minor in mathematics. I then headed to Berkeley for graduate school in physical chemistry. After three years at Berkeley I decided I’d rather do work with people rather than test tubes. In 1972 I entered the University of Southern California's (USC) School of Medicine and stayed there at LA County-USC Medical Center through my internship and residency in Internal Medicine, as well as a fellowship in Nephrology and a six month fellowship in Critical Care Medicine.

I returned to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1980 where I practiced Nephrology and Critical Care medicine in the Castro Valley/San Leandro area with special interests in bioethics and metabolic bone diseases.

Why I Came to Kaiser Permanente

With the vast changes in the Health Care environment that began in the late 1990s, I saw Kaiser Permanente as an excellent alternative to the complexities of private practice. I joined Kaiser Permanente in 2000. Here I have been able to focus all my clinical skills and years of experience on providing quality care to my patients in a truly integrated care environment. Since joining Kaiser Permanente I have been able to make my entire focus on providing up to date personal care to my patients.

My Philosophy of Pracitce

Most patients who are referred to me are quite anxious about seeing a kidney specialist. I have two major goals when I meet a patient for the first time:

1) Attempt to put the patient at ease and assure them I care about helping them.

2) Provide them with as much information about their problem as they care to know, and continue this dialogue through out their ongoing care.

My Interests Outside of Medicine

I have been happily married to my wife, Juliana, for more than 30 years. Juliana and I were medical students together and married our senior year of medical school. She is now in the private practice of Dermatology in Pleasanton. She practices under her maiden name, Juliana Cinque, MD.

Juliana and I have two children together, our son Matthew who graduated from Santa Clara University and is now working on a Masters Degree in Environmental Management, and our daughter Lisa, who just completed her master's degree in biochemistry at the University of California, Berkeley and is now working for a scientific device company locally.

I enjoy travel, fly-fishing, tennis, cooking and astronomy. I have a special interest in languages and am fluent in Spanish, speak some Italian and German. I enjoy Italian Opera. I enjoy reading about European history particularly from the Middle Ages to the Reformation. My favorite reading is historical biographies.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
