Welcome to My Home Page

Thank you for looking at my home page, where you can learn more about me. In addition, the links to the left offer you quick access to some sites that will help you learn more about specific gastrointestinal conditions and to help you access the Kaiser Permanente system.

About Me

There has been so much that has changed in my professional life with Kaiser Permanente since I joined the community in 1987. There has been a tripling in the size of the department, with new treatments and new capabilities. The most substantive significant change is an enhancement of what brought me to Kaiser Permanente initially: the easy ability to share information with colleagues about our discipline and to brainstorm about the best care for patients. Information exchange has partly been accelerated by the computer age, but the underpinnings of this philosophy have been with Kaiser Permanente all along. My treatment of you is transparent, with colleagues aware of my thoughts and interventions, and results of interventions easily available. This camaraderie supports me in delivering the best care I can at all times. It is easy to consult with other disciplines, knowing we all pull in the same direction for you without conflict of interest.

In addition to the typical activities of delivering in-patient hospital care, office consultation, and the subsequent endoscopic procedures which are sometimes indicated, I perform many of the liver biopsies requested by our department (is this because my first job as a youth was in a needlepoint store?). Approximately once a month I also teach a class for those of you interested in Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

I enjoy listening to what you have to say because very often you will make your diagnosis and you always you know your body best. I encourage moderation in all things and expect you to partner with me and take responsibility for health and life decisions.

Medicine is a remarkable profession and I hope my children are able to find such an honorable and enjoyable occupation some day. I hope you stay well, but look forward to working with you some day if you have need.

Disclaimer
If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
