About Me:

Although I originally grew up on the east coast in Hampton Roads, Virginia, I have come to love and appreciate the west coast weather, diversity, and landscape. I lived in Los Angeles for 8 years, then moved to North Houston, Texas, and returned to the west coast in the Bay Area in January 2010.

In the late 1980’s I was a cancer research assistant at Eastern Virginia Medical School. During this time I began to embrace a holistic philosophy of preventive medicine. This philosophy meshed well with my intrinsic prevention belief system.

While attending Virginia Tech I become more interested in preventing injuries and illnesses by addressing controllable factors in patient care. I soon began to question, while participating in a cardiac rehab program, how patients could prevent heart attacks or peripheral disease through lifestyle modifications. Thus, I began my rehabilitative services career journey.

I have served as a Senior Director for NASA and the YMCA, which included directing their rehabilitation services, fitness programs, and human performance labs for members, patients, test pilots and astronauts. I went on to receive my clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Southern California and remained on staff as adjunct faculty to instruct the Cardiopulmonary Course for the Doctors of Physical Therapy students.

In 2007, I was invited to upstart a private practice in the Houston, Texas area. The practice became rapidly successful with evaluating, treating, and returning to sport, amateur, collegiate, Olympic hopefuls and professional athletes from all over the country. In January 2010 my wife, two children and I decided to move to the Bay area.

My preventive and holistic evaluation and treatment approach is in line with Kaiser Permanente’s philosophy of total health. As the Director of Physical Medicine, Acupuncture, and Rehabilitative Services here at Redwood City, I feel that the collaboration between the clinician and the patient is paramount to help the patient achieve their functional goals. Whether the goal is to reach into an overhead cabinet or return to pitching at 90+ mph, my role as a movement specialist is to uncover physical impairments. I evaluate and treat by utilizing an evidence based movement approach for each patient. I find satisfaction in educating the patient on the reason(s) behind their condition and offering a comprehensive individualized treatment approach.

I specialize in Sports Physical Therapy and am one of the few Sports Physical Therapists who also sub-specializes in Vestibular Physical Therapy. I use my Doctor of Physical Therapy background to differentially determine if the condition is mechanical in nature, then I treat the root cause instead of just addressing the symptoms.

I am a member of the California and Texas Physical Therapy Associations, The American Physical Therapy Association, The American College of Sports Medicine, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. When not thinking of ways to prevent injuries and illnesses, I stay healthy by exercising, eating right and spending time with my family.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
