About Me

When I joined the Kaiser Oakland Pathology Department over twenty years ago, I felt I was very well prepared for the practice of Pathology. But I also had the misconception that the field of Pathology was static and involved an extensive but limited body of knowledge. I soon discovered Pathology is as diverse and changing as most of the fields of Medicine.

Everyday I experience and learn something new in the gross exam room or under the microscope. Keeping up with the evolving science (referred to as Continuing Medical Education - or - CME) is both exciting and fun. One of my better experiences was in 1992 when I did a self-imposed six-month sabbatical at New York University Medical School studying Dermatopathology (skin diseases) with Dr. A. Bernard Ackerman.

In addition, my colleagues and I here in Pathology work closely with many of the Pathologists at the Stanford University and UCSF Hospitals. It has been a wonderful, evolving career at Oakland Kaiser where I am surrounded by a wonderful group of highly competent, caring professionals.

My Credentials

Medical school St. Louis University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO
Residency Naval Hospital, Oakland, CA
Fellowship New York University School of Medicine, New York, NY
Board certification Pathology - Anatomic and Clinical, American Board of Pathology

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
