My Biography

I knew I would join Kaiser Permanente while in medical school. I have been a lifelong believer in our model of care and support the idea of providing preventative health care within an efficient, integrated system. The seamless integration between Physicians and specialty providers provide excellent care for our patients.

I joined the Permanente Medical Group in 2000 after completing my residency and chief residency at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco and have worked in the Department of Hospital Medicine since that time. In addition to caring for patients, I have a number of administrative roles in the medical center, including Assistant Physician in Chief for Hospital Operations and Risk.

My colleagues and I are known as "Hospitalists", a specialty of medicine which has existed for over 10 years but still is not well known. Hospital medicine is a specialty organized around the site of care (the hospital). Hospitalists provide patient care, teaching, research, and leadership related to hospital care. I am also keenly interested in medical ethics and palliative care.

Outside of work, I enjoy golfing, fishing and spending time with my wife Suzie, daughter Elyse, son Andre, and my trusty dog Pi.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
