My Profession and Why I Chose It

I still smile when people ask me about my profession. " You're an internist? Does that mean you specialize in internal organs?" Though in a sense, they're right. These internal organs can sometimes malfunction because of genetics, infections, or environment. These "malfunctions" present as symptoms which internists are trained to recognize in order to diagnose and treat diseases. The next question I answer is "What is a hospitalist?" As a hospitalist, my primary role is caring for adults who need hospital care. I chose hospital medicine because I am able to spend more time with patients, to get to know them and their medical conditions. My job is multifaceted. I stabilize and treat acutely ill patients.

My Credentials

Medical school UC San Diego School of Medicine, La Jolla, CA
Internship UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, CA
Residency UC Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, CA
Board certification Internal Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine

My Practice Philosophy

Because my philosophy is that we should all be responsible for our health care choices, I actively involve the patient during his hospital stay. To me, that means I explain to the patient what he can expect from his illness and I learn from the patient what is important to him and how he feels about his illness. That completed, we work together on a plan to optimize well-being based on medical knowledge and personal beliefs. This is important to me, especially with the advent of the internet. People can sometimes be overwhelmed with information, especially if they're acutely ill. I think patients appreciate learning about their condition in terms they can understand, especially if they feel I understand their concerns.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

Since my internship and residency training was at UC Davis Medical Center, I had several rotations through Kaiser Permanente here in Sacramento. Therefore, I was able to help care for Kaiser patients for three years prior to my becoming a staff physician here in 2002.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

I am proud to work in a facility that delivers high-quality care to a large population. I think Kaiser Permanente also does a great job in preventive and follow-up care. As we take part in the training of UC Davis Medical Center residents from different specialties, they can see firsthand how Kaiser can deliver high-quality care. As a result, many of these residents come on board as staff physicians when they complete their training.

On a Personal Note…

I have been in California since 8th grade and a Sacramento resident since 1999. As the daughter of a US Army soldier and a Japanese woman, a good deal of my childhood was spent in Japan. I enjoy traveling, especially to Japan to see my family. I also enjoy cooking, music, and running.
