Welcome to My Home Page

My name is Dr. Thailai Huynh and I am one of the Hospitalists serving the Kaiser Permanente Manteca Medical Center.

I was born and raised in Vietnam during the most difficult time of the country. I have seen a lot of problems for the people who lived without a good health care system, especially when I was the patient. This experience motivated me to do something to help people. My parents encouraged and supported me to become a physician in order to help others; as well as setting a good example by living a healthy life.

I received my medical degree from University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, in September 1991. After that, I practiced medicine in a rehabilitation center which specialized in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation.

I made a decision to move to the United States for my son to have an opportunity to get better education for a brighter future. After coming to the States, I underwent the recertification of my medical license. I completed my internship and my residency in Internal Medicine at Lutheran Medical Center at Brooklyn, NY. Finally, I finished my fellowship in Geriatric Medicine from New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens at Flushing, NY.

I decided to specialize in Geriatrics because taking care for the elderly are more challenging in many sense. The elderly patients are very sensitive to medication and they are mostly very fragile. They can get sick easier and can be easily affected by a lot of outside sources. They can even get depressed because of their age and health situation. With all the challenges that they are facing, they need more attention and support. What I need to pay attention is to treat the patient as a whole person; I also have to work with their family to understand their concerns too, especially in end of life caring. I enjoy seeing patients and make them feel happier and assist them to feel confident and relieve that they are being taken care of.

When patients got admitted to the hospital, they are generally very sick. Being a Hospitalist, I have the opportunity to treat these patients and help them get better and return them to their normal life. I am excited that I can make a difference in these patients’ lives. This is my reward for being a physician.

I joined Kaiser Permanente because the organization has a well-established system to create and maintain good relationships with the patients. With the advancement of technology, patients are more informed with health related materials. For the healthy, they can get information on preventative care; for the sick, they can get information to take care and prevent the development of more complicated problems.

Moving to the Central Valley, I am looking forward to enjoy more outdoor life with my son and my family. Also, most of my friends and relatives are in California. My parents are now living in Tacoma, Washington, but they will also be moving to California soon.

My medical interests include Geriatrics Medicine, diabetes and hypertension. My personal interests include reading, traveling and cooking. I really enjoy cooking; I can cook most of the traditional Vietnamese food although my mom’s cooking is still the best.

My Philosophy of Care

Quality of life is my principle while taking care for people. People may suffer not only physically but also socially, psychologically, or spiritually. I believe our patients needed to be treated as a whole person. Not just treating the sickness, but taking care of their mind, their concerns, they also need support from their family. The more knowledge, experience, trust and compassion we have the more support we can offer to our patients. All of these will help them recover and enjoy living good life.

Your comments and suggestions are always welcome.
