About Me:
In the Emergency Department, things are often so busy that we don’t get much of a chance to know each other, so I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a little about myself. I was born in Ohio, and because my father was in the U.S. Navy, had the opportunity to live in several interesting places while growing up, including the Philippines and Bermuda. My undergraduate degree was a B.S. in Biology from UC San Diego, and I continued on at UCSD for 4 years of medical school before doing a residency in Emergency Medicine at Valley Medical Center, Fresno. I chose Emergency Medicine as a specialty because I found that the part of Medicine that I enjoy most is that initial contact with a patient and the “detective” work that goes into making a diagnosis. In this specialty, it is hard to have a “boring” day.
After my training was completed in 1983, we moved to the foothills and I began my career doing Emergency Medicine at Kaiser Permanente in Sacramento, later moving to South Sacramento when the hospital was built. I enjoy my practice here for many reasons. In my specialty, we regularly deal with acute problems and crises, and it is gratifying to help patients and families through these difficult times. My colleagues in Emergency Medicine here are all excellent physicians and wonderful people who I am proud to work with. The same goes for our consulting physicians. Kaiser, South Sacramento, is intimately involved with the Emergency Medicine Residency at UCD Medical Center, and it is stimulating and challenging to help train new physicians in our specialty.
I have been married for 30 years and have three grown daughters who are all now married, one son still at home, and two granddaughters (two more on the way!). We all enjoy the activities that our area offers. I mountain bike, ski, snowboard, backpack and do some alpine climbing. I try to get regular exercise and eat right so that I can keep doing the things I love for as long as possible. Having a goal, like a future mountain climb, is a great motivator to keep me exercising regularly. In February 2005, I climbed Aconcagua in Argentina, the highest mountain outside of Asia, with another two of our Emergency Medicine physicians. Aconcagua Photos Another activity that I enjoy is riding the Harley Sportster that my wife surprised me with on my 50th birthday.
After practicing medicine for so long, I am impressed more than ever that we all need to be involved in maintaining our health by doing a few simple things – eat right, get regular exercise, keep your weight down, and have a few screening tests done that your doctor recommends. Good health is something that can slip away if we don’t put some effort into maintaining it!

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
