What is a Physician Assistant (PA)?

A Physician Assistant (PA) is a health care professional licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. After graduating from an accredited program, a PA must pass a national certification examination developed by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants in conjunction with the National Board of Medical Examiners. National certification is maintained by completing 100 hours of continuing medical education every 2 years and passing a recertification examination every 6 years. What a physician assistant does varies with training, experience, and state law.

At the Santa Clara Kaiser Surgery Clinic, PAs work closely with the surgeons both assisting in the operating room and performing clinic and hospital duties. Clinic responsibilities include pre-operative examinations; obtaining consents for surgery; post-operative wound evaluation and care; performing minor procedures; and pre-operative and post-operative care teaching.

Physician Assistants evaluate patients throughout the hospital before and after surgery. They order labs, medications, therapy, x-rays and other studies as needed and discuss each patient’s status and treatment plan with the patient’s surgeon.

Physician Assistants are an instrumental part of your surgical team.
