Genetic counselors are health professionals with specialized graduate degrees and experience in the areas of medical genetics and counseling. Genetic counselors identify families at risk for birth defects or genetic disease, investigate the problem present in the family, interpret information about the disorder, and analyze inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence and review available options with the family. Genetic counselors also serve as patient advocates and refer individuals to community or state support services.

Background

I completed my Bachelors of Science in Biology with a Minor in Chemistry and Psychology at Mesa State College of Colorado. After a couple years out of school working for an asthma research center, I moved to Wisconsin to complete my Masters in Genetic Counseling at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Following graduate school I found my way out to California and joined the amazing genetics team at Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center.

Interests

In my free time, I like to cook, hike, camp, run, swim, ski, and travel. Prior to joining the genetics team at Kaiser I had the fortunate opportunity to travel to Morelia, Mexico for two months. During my time there, I stayed with a local family and participated in daily language classes. Learning Spanish in such a way was an amazing experience, and someday I hope to be able to use it in my clinical practice.

Recommendations

As a genetic counselor, I strive to help patients understand complicated genetic matters and provide support to them in making difficult decisions. Many patients come to genetic counselors with very sensitive issues; therefore, I want my patients to feel that they are able to ask questions and receive answers in a comfortable environment. Please feel free to contact me at (408) 972-3305.
