Lending a hand

In college, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I dropped out and worked as a medical secretary. Then I became a Russian major with pre-med classes on the side. In medical school, I was a researcher in a bio-chemistry lab.

During my residency, the Chief of Medicine was really into infectious disease. He became my mentor. I specialize in infectious disease and HIV care and am credentialed by the American Academy of HIV Medicine. I also have a special interest is in clinical research and travel/tropical medicine.

I encourage patients to be candid and honest. I do my best to dispel their worries, support them as people and help them cope with any social issues they’re having

I’m deeply interested in international medicine and different cultural approaches to healthcare. I’ve traveled to Russia and Africa on short medical missions. One long-term commitment is to help HIV patients in Africa. In 2005, I joined Matibabu Foundation physicians The Matibabu Foundation in western Kenya.

Before joining Kaiser Permanente, I practiced infectious disease, AIDS care and internal medicine at Alta Bates Medical Center in Berkeley. I’m a member of the American College of Physicians, Infectious Disease Society of America, Association of Bay Area HIV Health Care Providers and International Society of Travel Medicine.

After growing up in the Minneapolis area, I moved to California in the ‘70s. I’m married to a scientist. We’re avid tandem cyclists and have ridden much of the West Coast and Arizona and parts of France and New Zealand. We also enjoy skiing and sailing. I speak Spanish, French and Russian.
